Vilnius unveils refreshed ‘Egg’ sculpture ahead of Easter

The city of Vilnius has unveiled a refreshed look for its well-known “Egg” sculpture, just in time for Easter, the municipality announced Tuesday.

Standing at the intersection of Šv. Stepono, Pylimo and Raugyklos streets, the sculpture has been a fixture in central Vilnius for more than two decades. This year, the symmetrical patterns that once adorned the surface have been replaced with a new design inspired by Lithuanian herbs and wild plants.

According to the city, the updated motif reflects traditional egg-decorating practices using botanical patterns and symbolises harmony with nature. The redesign also marks Vilnius’ designation as the European Green Capital this year.

The new look was created by artist duo Lijana Turskytė and Emilė, an aunt and a niece, who chose soft green tones to reflect the natural theme. They said the egg now appears as if it has “fallen into a wild meadow, brimming with life and greenery”.

Originally located on a pedestal in the Užupis district – before being replaced by the Angel sculpture – the “Egg” was later sold at auction. It was purchased by Gediminas Tursa, who, along with a business partner, relocated the sculpture to its current site.

This is the first update to the sculpture in 11 years.
